Question #112
Enabling Virtual COM port in Windows 2000.
Answer

This guide is for the new type Flash-Link cable (red label) only.

The Quark software requires that the Flash-Link appears on your computer as a virtual COM port. This process cannot be automatically performed in Windows 2000 systems and the following steps need to be performed manually.

Attention! This guide assumes that you have already downloaded the Flash-Link driver form the Spartan website and have installed it in the default location on your computer.

Step 1: After successful installation of the Quark software Flash-Links that are connected to the computer will be updated.  After the update process has finished Windows 2000 will prompt for the new driver to be loaded, the following message will be displayed:

Click Next.  If this message is not displayed go to Step 7.

Step 2: Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)" and click Next.

Step 3: De-select all but “Specify a Location”and click Next.

Step 4: Click Browse and find the folder named “Spartan_Flash-Link_driver” click OK then OK.

Step 5: If the following will be displayed, press Next.

Step 6: The following dialog will be displayed to indicate successful driver installation, click Finish.  The driver installation process is now complete.

Step 7: Only required if Windows 2000 does not automatically ask for drivers to be installed.  During the final stages of the Quark installation the installer will automatically launch Device Manager.  If Device Manager displays an exclamation next to USB Serial Port, right click the USB Serial Port and select Properties.

Step 8: Click Reinstall Driver.

Step 9: Click Reinstall Driver, then go to Step 1.
